Did you know Thanksgiving day is the leading day for home fires involving cooking equipment? More cooks in the kitchen can sometimes mean more fires, don't let your home become a statistic! Here are some tips to keep your family safe as we kick off the start of the holiday season!

  • Stay in your home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food
  • Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove; let them help prepare food by setting up stations away from the stove or in another room
  • Be sure to keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging and towels - away from the stovetop
  • Thoroughly thaw out frozen turkey before you deep fry it, and always deep fry outside your home or garage
  • Have a fire extinguisher handy
